The film was made in time to be shown for Yuri's Night Bay Area, an international celebration of science, art, technology, and the creative spirit held at NASA. The film was part of the S.T.E.A.M. Screen Documentary Program, and streamed to the astronauts on the International Space Station . Since then, it has been highlighted by NBC's Today show, Oprah, CBS5, and many other television stations both local and national.
This film will soon be available for other film festivals, special events, and can be found here as a digital download.
Ed's Inner Space is the story of Ed Gallagher, a blind man who uses VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) technology to interact in a world of visual stimuli.
Ed Gallagher was a building developer and visual artist until he contracted a virus that slowly robbed him of his vision. 10 years on, Ed is 100% blind, but is still as ambitious as ever. An adventurer at heart, Ed boarded the "Vomit Comet" to experience weightlessness as a blind person. Zero Gravity Arts Consortium, a group dedicated to introducing art and humanities to the conversation of space exploration, asked Ed to join them aboard a parabolic flight simulating weightlessness. Ed found it a profound and moving experience, which he hoped to duplicate on Earth in some way.
Ed is an active sailor and Commodore of the Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors (B.A.A.D.S.). The goal of B.A.A.D.S. is to use "co-ability" as a way for people with physical disabilities to participate in sailing. By pairing someone who has one disability to someone with a "complementing" disability (such as a paraplegic with a blind person) they are able to make one "able" sailor out of the two people with disabilities.
With this in mind, Ed Gallagher developed the Genoa Connections guidance system for the blind using wireless Internet technology to communicate with a remote operator. Receiving clear commands from someone viewing Ed's world through his head mounted web cam, Ed is able to participate in every day tasks, such as shopping, sailing and riding a bicycle.
THIS DOCUMENTARY, Ed's Inner Space follows Ed and his remote guides using the Genoa Connections system as he embarks on everyday tasks as well as his crazier adventures. Don't worry — Genoa, Ed's guide dog and loving companion, will never be replaced by Genoa Connections.
